Today we are going to focus on Dry/Yin deficient constitution types. Here in California we are in a severe drought and I am seeing more and more patients having the same symptoms as someone who has Dry/Yin deficient constitution. So this can definitely apply to more than just the constitutional type we are focusing on today.
Dryness can manifest throughout the body: dry eyes, dry nose, dry mouth, dry throat, dry cough, dry skin, thirsty, scanty urination, dry stools, etc. Basically all the symptoms of feeling dehydrated. However it is not the same as being dehydrated. Constitutional Dry or Yin deficient cannot be helped just overnight with water. At the far end of the spectrum they can have thirst, sore throat, low grade fever, night sweats, insomnia, anxiety, and low back pain.
Overall, females have a higher tendency of developing Yin deficiency. Women depletes Yin every menstrual cycle and birth.
So how do we re-hydrate the body so that it is no longer dry? Intake foods that are hydrating and cooling:
Light hydrating meals
Fresh fruits such as pears, banana
Squash and root vegetables
Melons
Cucumbers
Water chestnuts
Fish, pork
Barley, millet, sesame
Honey, sugar cane
Avoid foods that are:
Spicy, hot foods
Lamb
Heavy, greasy foods
Caffeine
Alcohol
